Antivirus Programs

There are a huge number of antivirus programs you can choose to protect your computer, tablet or smartphone, but how do you find the best or most reliable product? How do you know if it’s any good? Are you happy to use what came preinstalled on your computer or a friend’s recommendation? Well, you don’t have to blindly chose an antivirus solution; you can make an informed decision. The first decision to make in choosing an antivirus product is whether you want to spend any money or not.

Free Antivirus Products :

Generally, free antivirus products have similar antivirus detection features as the paid versions and will detect and block malware. Free versions do nag you a little and usually advertise their paid versions, but this is to be expected with a free offering and most products allow you to turn off updates and alerts.

Paid Antivirus Products :

Paid antivirus products usually have bonus features and function more as a complete security package. You will get an anti-theft tracking, an additional firewall, phishing filters etc.

It is recommended to stick with a well-known antivirus program from a reputable company. Their products will be regularly scrutinised and will appear in antivirus software reviews which will give you some idea as to how well it performs in comparison to it’s competition. There are virus programs which may disguise themselves with fake names like Antivirus Security, Internet Security, Antivirus Removal etc. You may be putting yourself at risk of virus infection by choosing an unknown antivirus program, so please be aware of this when choosing an antivirus product.

There are many websites where you can find antivirus tests and review results. E.g. West Coast Labs, Virus Bulletin, AV-Test etc to name a few. These sites performs regular tests on antivirus products, ranking them based on their performance, protection and usability. This gives an idea as to how successful they are in protecting malware samples which are given to them in a test environment. If you are looking for a new antivirus product these sites will provide you with details about how well they performed. You may still choose the best one based on the results, but still it is never foolproof, so take your time to consider multiple options.

The fact is there is no single best antivirus product. The best way to protect is to remember the basic computer security practices. No matter how good your antivirus product is, some piece of malware may slip through. An antivirus program will still minimise your computer’s exposure to malware and reduce the risk of being infected with viruses.
