Important: Intel based Security Flaw on the Horizon

January 03, 2018 at 3:44 PM

Here at McDonalds IT we always try to have our fingers on as many security-oriented pulses as possible, currently there is a very interesting one that is likely to erupt into mainstream media in the next day or two.

This is a fault with Intel based CPU’s, and based on market share, 99% of those reading this on a PC or Mac will be affected.

How will this affect home and business computing? We’re not sure yet, but what we do know is that the fixes for this particular bug will cause a potential 30% performance drop when applied.

This means Intel based CPU’s will be operating 30% worse than before, once this bug is fixed.

We are expecting patches to be released shortly from Microsoft for windows operating systems, once this is done we will be rapidly testing the patches and reviewing the performance difference so that we can inform you of the best next steps.

However as this is a security issue, our initial recommendation is to indeed patch as soon as possible.

If you have any queries or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the McDonalds IT team on Security@mcdonaldsit.co.nz
