Smart Internet Searching

Do you have to memorise insignificant facts and possess a photographic memory to perform a certain task? Well, you don’t need too as there is some good news. Assuming you have a computer and can access the internet, life is now an open book. If you can use a good internet search engine there is no need to burden your mind with facts or have a great memory unless you are playing card games or cracking jokes with friends!

Nowadays, everyone is expected to be smart and efficient in internet searching techniques. But are we really? Well, there are few tips and tricks some users may be unaware of including many tech savvy internet searchers.

Listed below are some smart internet searching skills you can try in the Google search engine.

1. Keep it simple

Google search knows how to search for a lot of things. You don’t need to be too specific. If you need a bus stop nearby, use this to search.

  • Bus stop nearby

Google search will grab your location and suggest you the closest bus stop.

2. Use the tabs

On the top of every search are a number of tabs. Usually, you will see All, Images, Videos, News and More. If you need images, use the image tab. If you need videos, use the videos tabs. Using tabs would define what kind of search you need to do. Most people might be using these tabs already. But if you are not, then it is highly recommended to get associated with them. You can cut searching time dramatically.

3. Use quotes

If you are searching for something specific, try using quotes to minimize the guesswork for Google search. For instance, if you search for Puppy Dog Kennels, the engine will search for the content that contains those three words in any order. But, if you search “Puppy Dog Kennels” it will search exactly as typed. This helps locate precise information and save time.

4. Search multiple words at once

Sometimes you may not find what you want by searching only a single word or phrase. As Google search is flexible, it lets you search for multiple entries. This can narrow down the search and help you find exactly what you are looking for. For instance, “ Best ways to prepare for an overseas trip” OR “ How to prepare for an overseas trip”. These two exact phrases will be searched.

It can be done using words too. i.e.  sugar OR white sugar. This will search for pages that have either sugar or white sugar!

5.  Add search items in increments

There is always going to be instances when Google search will not give the desired results. In that case, keeping it simple may not be the best option. The best method will be to start with something simple and gradually get into more complex, as shown below.

First attempt : overseas trip

Second attempt : preparation for an overseas trip

Third attempt : how to prepare for an overseas trip

These small increments will refine the search and bring you more targeted terms. The reason you may not want to go straight from the first attempt to the third attempt is you may miss some crucial information by skipping the second step. Using this technique will provide a broader search with the best information.

6.  Unit and money conversions

Google search can quickly and accurately convert both measurement units and currency value. Here’s how to do it.

  • Miles to km- This will convert miles to kilometers. You can put a number in front to convert to a certain number. Like “5 miles to km” will show you how many kilometers are in 5 miles.

  • NZD to USD- This will convert NZ dollars to US dollars. You can put a number in front to convert. Like the measurements above, you can add numbers to find the exact conversions for a certain amount of money.

Google search engine is a powerful tool to search anything and everything if used efficiently. Using some of the tips mentioned above will not only make search easier but will also save time.
